THE HUMMINGBIRDS AND THE
HUMMINGBIRD ARTISTS ARE
HEADED TO TUCSON - Texas
Couple Follow Tiny Wings to
Tucson
- National Coverage, April, 2005
Cherie McBride thought she had
seen, heard, painted and dodged
enough hummers in South Texas ..
until she heard about Tucson’s
Festival of Hummingbirds. Dr. Ross
Hawkins up in Delaware told her
about his Hummingbird Society and
how they would wing their way to
Tucson prior to May 14 and 15, 2005
- landing right at the Tucson
Convention Center.
“Take Me Back to Tucson!” He
explained that the Hummingbird
Society comes to Tucson every year
because Southeast Arizona has more
species of hummingbirds than any
other part of the U.S. An entire
convention of hummingbirds and
hummingbirders with a corresponding
art show ... Hmmm!!!
The temptation was much too much
to resist. Hummers in the canyons.
Hummers on scenic trails. Hummers
in the backyards. No respectable wild
bird artist would miss a show like this!
So Cherie and her composer -
husband, Glenn signed on and
began planning their 1200-mile trek
from Lake Jackson, Texas.
The couple will show up in Tucson at
the Festival of Hummingbirds with
Cherie’s Wild Bird Brush Paintings
and Glenn’s Hummingbird Music
album. And they’ll share good
company with other top-flight wildlife
artists from around the country. This
art show gives bird lovers, art lovers,
gallery owners and interior
decorators a yearly opportunity to
discover trends in wildlife art.
Cherie McBride’s unique talent
combines traditional Chinese brush
painting with contemporary American
technique and imagery. Her
“Flamenco” series shows off pairs of
hummingbirds in dynamic mating swirl
-
dances. Her paintings of roadrunners
have also generated strong print
sales this year. Some customers
prefer a pair “with victim.” Others
choose a painting“without victim.”
Cherie says that bird behavior is
apparently just one more way that art
patrons express
themselves, their philosophies and
lifestyles.
Glenn McBride’s talent lies in
composing peaceful instrumental
music. His previous album, “Center
Pieces,” has helped many painters,
sculptors and nature watchers relax
and get into flow. This new
hummingbird album builds on his
previous work in sensitivity,
meditation and serenity. For
simplicity, a single guitar and piano
are featured on several of the tracks.
(Doctor Ross Hawkins is Director of
The Hummingbird Society. Starting
from a small office in Newark,
Delaware, in 1996, Hawkins founded
The Hummingbird Society. It all
began as a passion for photographing
hummingbirds, a pleasure he enjoys
even today. Realizing that there was
no organized group dedicated
to hummingbirds and their
conservation - even though such
groups existed for bluebirds, purple
martins, and even turkey vultures -
he created the structure and
recruited the individuals necessary to
make such a Society into a reality.)
